Benchmark Evolving PM Skills with New Research Study

Posted by Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin

Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin is editor-in-chief for PM Solutions Research, and the author, co-author and editor of over twenty books on project management, including the 2007 PMI Literature Award winner, The AMA Handbook of Project Management, Second Edition.

In 2015, PM College, with PM Solutions Research, released a study examining the skill levels of project managers ... and taking a look at both PMs and executives' opinions about those skills. The gap between assessments by execs and PMs was remarkable: there was little agreement on how skilled PMs were, and even less on which skills were most important! This perceived skills gap was an important finding, helping professional development folks design training programs. The Project Manager Skills Benchmark still makes good reading--but in designing a new study on project management skills, we had to go in a new direction. So much has changed since 2015! And we no longer wanted to merely identify existing gaps, but provide a roadmap for the future.

Project Management Skills for Value Delivery reflects the changing roles of project and program managers within organizations, focusing on the skills required to transform organizations, realize benefits, manage strategic intiatives, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. To read more about the ideas behind the study design, see my interview with PM Solutions VP, Client Success, Eric Foss.

Project Management Skills for Value Delivery is designed to help us understand the current skill levels of those engaged in project management in your organization as well as trends that will lead to improved training and development, improved project management performance, and greater organizational success. Skills are based on PMI’s Talent Triangle, PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition, and The Standard for Project Management, as well as on the field research provided by our consulting and training staffs. By sharing your experience, you contribute to a report that will help you:

  • Benchmark your organization's project management skill levels against others
  • Build your business case to strengthen your training and development efforts

Participants in the study receive complete survey results, an advance copy of the report, and an exclusive invitation to a webinar with research findings. There are also opportunities to be interviewed for follow-on qualitative research into specific areas of the study.

FAQ:

  • Deadline for submission is February 10, 2023.

Improving project management skill levels relies on real-world data. Let's get started!
