Posted by Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin

Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin is editor-in-chief for PM Solutions Research, and the author, co-author and editor of over twenty books on project management, including the 2007 PMI Literature Award winner, The AMA Handbook of Project Management, Second Edition.

The newest white paper in the PM Solutions Research PMO series goes hand in hand with one of PM College's flagship courses, Kent Crawford's Seminars World workshop, Evolving the PMO. The white paper, Evolving the Established PMO: Become a Strategic Partner, provides an advanced how-to for PMO leaders and their organizations.

Of particular interest ot the training side of the house, this white paper details the changing role of the strategic PMO in developing and managing human resources. Here's a quote:

“On the human resource side, the number and variety of roles within the PMO has grown exponentially. Today’s EPMO has a larger and more diverse staffing profile than ever before and includes highly specialized roles that provide effectiveness and efficiency in use of project management, estimating, change control, portfolio and benefits tracking, knowledge management, performance measurement, and risk software tools. These enabling roles allow program and project managers to focus on the ‘art’ of project management as well as to expand the influence of the EPMO into the strategic realm.”

The white paper gathers together data from multiple research reports to show how the PMO’s role has expanded. Of particular note, the extent to which training is a differentiator for PMOs is underscored by the fact that “Best in Class” PMOs offer twice as many training days, as well as types of training, than the average.
