How Do You Say “Project Management Excellence” In Mandarin?

Posted by Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin

Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin is editor-in-chief for PM Solutions Research, and the author, co-author and editor of over twenty books on project management, including the 2007 PMI Literature Award winner, The AMA Handbook of Project Management, Second Edition.

2015 has marked a milestone for PM Solutions / PM College’s publishing and research program, and it is one that is in keeping with the continuing expansion of project management methodologies across industries and around the globe.

PM Solutions had previously published Chinese (Mandarin) translations of two books over the past five years (The Strategic Project Office, Second Edition and The Project Management Maturity Model). Now, 2015 has seen the completion of three new contracts for Mandarin versions of books written and/or edited by our associates.

SSeven Steps to Strategy Execution - by J. Kent Crawford - Chinese Mandarin Translationeven Steps to Strategy Execution, by J. Kent Crawford as lead author, with myself and Jim Pennypacker, was the first to appear. Translated by Zhang Bin and published by China Electric Power Press, the project was spearheaded by Jaio Yingbo.  As Kent commented in the Acknowledgements in the book, “Ms. Jiao provided the unrelenting passion to have this book translated into the Chinese language.  Ms. Jiao’s Project Management College (China) and Winning Management Consulting Co, Ltd. provide China with high value services and education including many other books on the subject of project management and Project Management Office.”

Ms. Jiao also played a major role in the second book, Project Management Essentials, Third Edition (published in the US by Maven House Press). Debbie Crawford, president of the PM College explains:

“We were introduced to our current partner in China, Jaio Yingbo (President, X’ian Winning Training Center) through our former partner Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  Angel Jordan, former Provost of CMU, along with the late David Schoon brought us together to create an opportunity to bring training to China.  Ms. Jaio’s company became PM College China for the purpose of being our Master Distribution partner.  PM College has

provided training in China to CNPEC and other major Chinese organizations.”

IProject Management Essentials, Third Edition - Chinese Mandarin Translationn tandem with this training, it became imperative that the textbook used in the PM Essentials courses be available in Mandarin. Project Management Essentials, Third Edition is a collaborative work, with chapters authored by PM College senior instructors who also teach the courses, so that the text closely mirrors the information as it is presented to students.

Finally I recently received word from the American Management Association that the AMA Handbook of Project Management, Fourth Edition, which I co-edit with Paul Dinsmore of DinsmoreCompass consulting and training in Rio de Janiero, will be published in China next year, also by China Electric Power Press. As co-editor, I have been able to tap the knowledge and writing skills of several of my past and present colleagues at PM Solutions and PM College to provide chapters on topics ranging from Business Skills for Project Managers (Debbie Crawford) to Cost Management (Paul Lombard) and beyond, with chapters on change management, the PMO, portfolio management, communications management, PM in the marketing field and more penned by “the PM experts.”

It’s exciting to think of the knowledge transfer taking place across cultures and languages among people dedicated to project management. PM Solutions and PM College are proud to be a part of this trend.
